How I Got Here…

Years ago I asked a psychic what role writing would play in my future. She looked at me with what I can only describe as urgency and said, “You better write the first one before you are 53.”

I was torn between asking “the first what?” and “what happens at 53?”

At the time, I was 48, and five years felt like plenty of time. It was not.

Here’s the thing. I’ve been a copywriter, a stand-up comedian, a Moth storyteller. Writing has never been far from my life. But a book? A real project with my name on it and something true to say? That one kept getting pushed to the back of the shelf.

A different psychic and past life regression might help explain my reluctance. I found myself in late 1800s Canada as a schoolteacher who’d saved enough to rent a room on the Hudson River. Typewriter. Reams of crisp white paper. A dream of becoming a writer. And then, instead of writing, I gallivanted. I charmed. I did everything except sit down and do the thing. And then I died young of a brain aneurysm with a stack of blank pages next to the typewriter.

Clearly, I didn’t learn my lesson the first time.

Because here I was, five years after a psychic handed me a deadline, still gallivanting in my own way…thinking about the project, talking about the project, being the kind of person who was going to write the project. Until December 2020, when I sat down, opened a blank Moleskine, and started a year of daily meditation that I documented every single day.

This Substack is that story. I’m glad you’re here for it.

A subscription to My Spirituality Experiment is free. I love free content and have been known to share an app password or two in my day. As my financial situation has waxed and waned over the years, I make every effort to support artists when and where I can. I love a sliding scale or donation optional, so that’s what I’m doing here. My Spirituality Experiment will always have free content, but if you are so inclined to make a donation or a voluntary paid subscription, please know you have my eternal gratitude.

A Note on Credentials:

I had no formal training when I started this experiment — just curiosity and a blank notebook. But the deeper I got into the practice, the deeper I wanted to go. Midway through the year I took what I can only describe as a side quest. I trained with Peter Woodbury, one of the leading practitioners in the field, in Soul Contact and Past Life Regression. I am so not a guru. But…I’m not entirely uncredentialed either.
